Pipa

The Pipa dated as early as the Qin and Han dynasties. It has a long round neck and a body that is the shape of half a pear. It is one of the better-developed traditional Chinese plucking instruments. It used to be held horizontally and played by a pluck, but it is now held vertically on the performers lap and played with five fingers (of the same hand). It has grown from a minor instrument to a solo instrument as the techniques mature during the past two thousand years.

Erhu

The erhu is a two-stringed bowed musical instrument. The modern erhu is in perfect fifth and is of mid-high range in the huqin family. Erhus are mostly made with wood with one end of the sound box covered in python skin, which gives the erhu its unique timbre. Standard bows for the erhu are 816 mm in length. The grades of the bow are distinguished by the diameter of the bow sticks, which are made with elastic bamboo. The bow hair is made of the hair from the tail of a horse. The best bows are made with white horsehair.

Guzheng(Chinese Zither)

The guzheng, also known as the Chinese zither, is a traditional Chinese instrument. After being distributed to Korean Peninsula, Japan, and Vietnamese, it has been adapted to several other Asian zithers, such as Korean gayageum (가야금), Japanese koto, and Vietnamese Đàn tranh.

The guzheng is made of wood with strings accompanying, which is usually tuned in a traditional pentatonic scale. From the 5 strings in Warring States Period, the guzheng had been developed into the 16 strings in the modern (Qing Dynasty). In order to improve better performances of the guzheng, nowadays, there are multiple ways for extending ranges of the tone and increasing the volume. One of the methods is to replace silk strings with steel or nylon strings.

Traditionally, Guzheng has played a major role in the instrumental ensemble or the accompaniment for folk storytelling-singing because of its unique, rich levels of performance.
